Mapping the Future: Physics and Chemistry Postdoctoral Researchers’ Experiences and Career Intentions

Oxford Research & Policy carried out research on behalf of the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry to investigate the experiences of postdoctoral researchers in UK physics and chemistry departments.

Using an online survey the project explored postdoctoral researchers’ experiences and career intentions in the following areas:

  • Motivation for undertaking postdoctoral
  • Next career steps
  • Long-term career plans
  • Opportunities for career development
  • Culture of departments

The report outlines the similarities and differences between postdoctoral researchers in chemistry and physics and sets out recommendations.
